Located east of downtown, Fox Point is one of the eldest neighborhoods in Providence. Roger Williams landed here in 1636 and soon after the first settlers appeared. Today's India Point Park is the location of a former busy harbor with 58 wharfs where the ships to the West Indies would land. In the 19th Century, Providence first two railroad stations would be placed in Fox Point (for the Providence Boston and Providence Stonington Lines in 1835 and 1837.) It was settled heavily by Irish immigrants in the early 19th Century, followed by Portuguese, Cape Verdeans and Azoreans in the second half. Saint Joseph Church (1851, Patrick Keeley) and Our Lady of the Rosary Church (1885) near the western end of Wickenden Street are architectural witnesses to these two waves of immigrants.

For further information on the Fox Point neighborhood, consult the Providence Plan website.
