The Manton neighborhood on the northwestern edge of Providence along the Woonasquatucket river was used as farmland since first settlers arrived in 1683. Some industry settled along the river in the 18th Century. RI College is today situated in this neighborhood, continuing a long history of educational institutions. Manton Heights public housing project of 1945, which fell into disrepair in the 1970s and 1980s, at the same time that the area experienced a general loss of population and decline of housing stock. Since the 1990s a revival of the area is palpable.
