This neighborhood in the northeastern section of the city, was settled in the 17th Century by farmers and tavern keepers along today's North Main Street (see the Jeremiah Dexter Farmhouse of 1754) . The growing industry along the Mashassuck river and the establishment of streetcar lines n the second half of the 19th Century led to the growth of working class and middle class neighborhoods. The North Burial Ground lies in the center of this neighborhood, which was greatly affected by the arrival of I 95 and one of the city's major urban renewal projects on Lippitt Hill from 1950-1970.
