The small neighborhood west of downtown houses today an interesting mix of residential, commercial, industrial and institutional developments. Less than half is used for residential purposes. The Veterans Administration Memorial Hospital, is Valley's largest institution. This structure stems from the fact that the Woonsquatucket river is central to the neighborhood and attracted early industrial growth, such as the Valley Worsted Mills, or the Woonasquatucket Print Works, in the mid 19th Century. Several of the former factories are now occupied by artists and small manufacturing shops.
