The Wanskuck neighborhood in the northern part of the city, was, like most outer sections of Providence farmland until the arrival of industry in the 19th Century. Larger corporations discovered the advantages of the area (its West River and clear water ponds in the second half of the century, and brought with them the growth of working class residential neighborhoods and great influx of recent immigrants. Trolleys were established from the 1890s onwards. Industry moved away after the second World War and the area is today one of the less affluent in the city.
