Wayland is a residential neighborhood between College Hill and the Seekonk river, which was mostly developed during the early 20th Century after settlement had begun slowly after 1865. It contains a large number of striking single family residences, as well as early 20th Century elegant apartment buildings. Trolley lines encouraged further development in the last decades of the 19th Century. By the 1940s Wayland Square had developed into the most densely settled central area with a certain amount of commercial activity.
