Papers, Exams, and Sections

Note:  The midterm, the paper, and final should all be double-spaced, 12-pt font, and in either Times New Roman or some similar font.

Midterm: The midterm will be handed out in class on Tuesday, October 11; it must be handed back on Tuesday, October 18.  For the midterm, students will be asked to write on two out of three topics, and must turn in organized, polished essays of not more than five pages.  Students are expected to refer to the literature that we have read up to the time of the midterm; references to additional (outside) sources are welcome.  All direct references to the literature must be properly cited (in whatever citation form students prefer).  These essays must reflect an understanding of the literature and a presence at the lectures.  Late exams will not be accepted.

Students who feel that they could improve their grades may, if they wish, rewrite their exams in coordination with their TA.

Paper:  There is a five-page paper due on November 29, 2005.  This paper must either be one of the proposed optional readings (see syllabus) or on another text proposed by the student in coordination with their section leader (or Professor Bartov).  These papers need to discuss the texts the students have chosen to read, and must contextualize the text within the framework of the course, including in terms of the literature that has been read for the course and any other relevant text.  This essay should not only be a book review essay, but should also be an essay that attempts to analyze the text as part of one of the main topics of the course.

Late papers will not be accepted.  As there will be no opportunity to rewrite papers, students may, if they wish, submit drafts to their section leaders for comments before submitting their final drafts.  Any drafts must be submitted enough in advance of the paper deadline so as to allow section leaders to respond effectively.

Final: the final will be in a similar format as the midterm, but will cover material for the entire course.  The final will be handed out on December 6, and will be due December 13.  There will be no opportunity to rewrite the finals.
