Central Facilities
In 1991, the Division of Engineering and the Department
of Physics merged their individual Shops to create what is now called
JEPIS, Joint Engineering Physics Instrument Shop. JEPIS is administered by
CAMR director as an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental, non-profit
facility. JEPIS is advised by a committee with representatives of both
Physics and Engineering Departments to guide us with the needs of the
scientific community, now and in the future.
The purpose of JEPIS is to assist the scientific departments at Brown in
the development of experiments, research projects and instructional
classes. We offer all the basic machine shop capabilities, with the
addition of CNC design consultation, hands on training and instruction
through a non-credit basic machine shop course and new this year an
advanced course geared toward Graduate Students. We expect our Student
Shop renovations and enhancements, which are almost complete, to provide
our students with a strong base for their experimental studies. In
addition, JEPIS staff is always available to give general advise and
assistance to the Brown Staff, Students and Faculties in the finding of
sources for the materials and devices they require for their projects or
instructional classes.
The Instrument Shop is available to all Brown University departments
including our loyal customers from Engineering, Physics, Neurosciences,
Psychology, Bio-Med, Facility Management, Food Services and the Central
Heat Plant.
JEPIS operates as a non-profit, cost center, charging an hourly fee for
labor plus materials used to defer operational expenses. Major
technological improvements and capital expense is not included in the
hourly rate.
