Thinking
with Materials: This workshop welcomes elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers to learn hands-on, dynamic methods of teaching. Students often retain information better when it is presented in a guise of familiar tools and strategies. How can a soda can teach students about pressure? Material design ? Economics ? In this professional development workshop planned for spring 2005, participants will learn how to use familiar objects to understand fundamental concepts of chemistry, physics, math, and engineering. The workshop sessions will be facilitated by 9 engineering faculty at Brown. We present a variety of educational materials for pre-college students that have been developed as a result of our research, teaching, and experience with pre-college outreach programs. Some of the topics that will be presented are sports applications (baseballs and ski jumps), an introduction to engineering and design, crystal chemistry, biomaterials, insulating materials and energy conservation, composite materials, and liquid crystal displays (including an opportunity to build a simple working device). Teachers will be encouraged to foster a dialogue with not only the faculty, but with fellow teachers as well. To this end, curriculum standards will be addressed for topics that are presented. We hope that this workshop will help reinvigorate educators who are searching for innovative ideas to put to use in their classrooms and laboratories. Thinking with Materials is sponsored by the Center for Advanced Materials Research at Brown University, with generous support from the Materials Science and Engineering Center established at Brown by the National Science Foundation. This workshop, formerly known as Thinking with Stuff, was offered in previous years through the Institute of Elementary and Secondary Education at Brown. Alumni: Teachers who have participated in Thinking with Stuff in previous years are welcome to attend any of the sessions at no charge. On your registration form, please let us know which year(s) you attended. Professional Development Credit approval has been requested from the Rhode Island Department of Education for this 15 hour workshop. Thinking with Materials will meet on the following days, from 3:30 – 6:00 PM: Tuesday, March 15, 2005 Tuesday, March 29, 2005 Tuesday, April 12, 2005 Tuesday, April 26, 2005 Tuesday, May 10, 2005 Tuesday, May 17, 2005 Because of the support that we receive from the National Science Foundation, Registration for Thinking with Materials is only $50 to attend all six sessions.
