Research Experience for Undergraduates Program
The Materials Research Science & Engineering Center is the primary sponsor of our REU program through the NSF grant. The REU program offers college students the opportunity to work for ten weeks under the guidance of an MRSEC faculty member. During the 10 week program regular scheduled weekly activities for the REU students have been developed to broaden their knowledge of research. Several of these will focus on the use of various experimental techniques in materials research whereas others will involve local industries, giving lectures on topics such as intellectual property, patents and notebook keeping.
Each REU participant will work with a research group, on a given project allowing the students to have a research experience as well as a social and educational opportunity to guide his/her future. Students are required to present a report at the end of their summer research activity and to complete a program evaluation. A stipend is available for the 10 week program as well as housing and travel costs reimbursements are offered. The program will begin in early June and run through early August. Our program is particularly interested in increasing the participation in research of women, underrepresented minorities and persons with disabilities.
