Admissions and Financial Aid
The graduate program in American Civilization at Brown University is highly selective. The one-year M.A. in American Civilization accepts at most two students a year. About ten students are accepted for the Master of Arts in Public Humanities program from the several dozens that apply. We receive over one hundred and fifty applications for admission into the Ph.D. program each year and accept between eight and ten students.
Graduate School Application forms are available on-line {http://gradschool.brown.edu/go/generalinfo} and by request to the Graduate School.
Financial Aid
One year MA in American Civilization:
No aid is available for one-year master’s degree candidates, although student loans may sometimes be obtained.
MA in Public Humanities:
Public Humanities M.A. students are eligible for partial financial aid. In recent years, most students have received fellowships that cover approximately 40 percent of tuition costs. Students in good standing can expect to receive similar support for their second year of the program. Stipends for summer internships and part-time jobs in public humanities-related work are available for many students. There are no Teaching Assistantships available for M.A. students.
Two fully-supported, two year fellowships are available for students pursuing an M.A. in Public Humanities for selected students with an expressed interest in the ways that public humanities institutions commemorate the history of slavery and address the subject of retrospective justice. The fellowships are intended to help prepare future professionals who can help museums and cultural institutions to address controversial issues, teaching the public and initiating broad conversations about slavery and retrospective justice. The fellowships cover tuition, fees, and a stipend. Students interested in this fellowship should indicate their interest in the Personal Essay and explain how their academic and professional preparation and career goals make them appropriate candidates for this fellowship.
PhD in American Civilization:
The Graduate School guarantees five years of funding to all students admitted for the PhD. The aid includes tuition, stipend, health insurance, and health fee, as well as 3 years of summer support, if students remain in good standing. Students generally serve as teaching or research assistants for between four and six semesters; teach their own courses for one semester; and receive the first and fifth year as fellowship years, without work responsibilities.
The application for financial aid is included with the application for graduate study.
