Anthropology and Population is a special track in Brown University's Ph.D. program in anthropology. Candidates file a regular application with the Graduate School, but indicate in their essay their interest in this program. Students must fulfill all of the requirements for the A.M.- Ph.D. program, receiving a broad education in anthropology.
Students are required to take graduate seminars in Anthropological Demography (AN 206), Issues in Anthropology and Population (AN 209) and Methods of Anthropological Research (AN 222). They are also required to take two courses in social demography: Principles of Population (SO 208) and Techniques of Demographic Analysis (SO 223). They choose Anthropological Demography as one of their preliminary examination topics and participate in the activities of the Working Group in Anthropology and Population and attend the regular colloquia of the Population Studies and Training Center. M.A. in Anthropology/Museum Studies
In conjunction with the Haffenreffer Museum, the department offers a special program leading to the M.A. in Anthropology/Museum Studies as a Master's level option for Ph.D. students. Emphasis is on a firm grounding in core courses taken by all Master's level students; on the study, analysis, and exhibition of material culture, and on museological study and practice.
