Pembroke Seminar Research Lecture JEAN COMAROFF "NATIONS WITH/OUT BORDERS: Received models of society and politics have undergone drastic revision in the West. The image is fading of an organic society in which divisions of class and culture were contained within national boundaries; in which uncivil or criminal classes were believed, by means of welfare and moral reform, to be recoverable "citizens-in-waiting." On the rise is a different model of national territory as embattled homeland; of borders as elusive lines to be redrawn against the onslaught of enemies -- aliens, migrants, terrorists, home grown saboteurs, felons, the indigent poor -- who threaten the citadel state's moral and physical integrity. With special reference to new forms of politics and citizenship in post-apartheid South Africa, this lecture explores why immigrant aliens have become the standardized nightmare of those seeking to "imagine community" under these conditions, and how nature comes to serve as the basis for conjuring new senses of belonging. YEAR OF INDIA LAUNCH: Songs of a Sorrowful Man Film Premiere and Reception
Thursday, October 1 at 5pm
Salomon Center 101, College Green
Join us on Thursday, 10/1, at 5pm, as Brown launches the Year of India with a film premiere of Songs of a Sorrowful Man and an Indian-themed reception. The film (35 mins.) follows a charismatic figure – a revered mystic, composer and painter – and chronicles his engagement with Hindus and Muslims, his tolerant Sufi Muslim spirituality, and his artistic legacy.
The film is co-directed by Brown Professor Lina Fruzzetti, Wesleyan Professor Akos Ostor, and Dhirubhai Ambani IICT Professor Aditi Nath Sarkar. The screening and Q&A will feature Fruzzetti; Ostor; Donna Wulff, associate professor of religious studies; and Vazira F-Y Zamindar, assistant professor of history.
Throughout 2009-2010, the Year of India (www.brown.edu/india) will feature an exciting program of major public lectures, cultural events, academic conferences, and other explorations of India and its dramatic rise on the global stage. Songs of a Sorrowful Man is emblematic of the Year of India – highlighting as it does India’s opportunities and challenges as one of the world’s most multicultural democracies.
The event is sponsored by the Office of Campus Life and Student Services, Anthropology Department, and Dean of the College. The Year of India is housed at the Watson Institute for International Studies.
