Jessaca Leinaweaver conducts research in cultural anthropology and anthropological demography within Peru and the Peruvian diaspora. She has published on informal child fostering in the urban Andes, aging in Andean Peru, and transnational adoption and migration from Peru to Spain.
Dr. Leinaweaver is the winner of the Margaret Mead Award for her first book, The Circulation of Children: Kinship, Adoption, and Morality in Andean Peru (Durham: Duke University Press, 2008). The book examines child circulation, the movement of young people between households and families: from informal adoptions to household labor recruitment, and from child trafficking to legal adoption. A Peruvian filmmaker produced a short inspired by this research: El Vestido, by Evelyne Pégot-Ogier.
Dr. Leinaweaver's second book, Adoptive Migration: Raising Latinos in Spain (Durham: Duke University Press, 2013), analyzes the experiences of internationally adopted Peruvians in Madrid, within a context where Peruvian migrants are a visible and often mistreated minority. It identifies and explores unexpected sites where migration and adoption intersect. The research that led to this book was funded by the NSF, Wenner-Gren, and Fulbright.
At Brown, Dr. Leinaweaver is a member of the Population Studies and Training Center and of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. In 2009-2010, she was the Edwin and Shirley Seave Faculty Fellow at the Pembroke Center. She is on leave during 2013-14.
Dr. Leinaweaver teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in cultural anthropology, Latin American Studies, and anthropological demography.
