Areas of Interest:
I study football (soccer) in Istanbul, looking specifically at how discourses of fairness and masculinities enmesh through manifestations and performances of soccer fandom. I am interested in analyzing the widespread catchphrase “fair-play,” in its variant usages by football players, fans, media and football officials. I am also interested in studying conceptualizations about the city of Istanbul through the lens of football and understanding the ways in which stadiums and football events inscribe meaning in neighborhoods and other spaces in the city.
