Description

Co-Investigators: Drs. Tracy O'Leary Tevyaw, Suzanne Colby, Jennifer Tidey, Damaris Rohsenow, Nancy Barnett, and Christopher Kahler. The major purpose of this 2 x 2 randomized control study is to examine whether the combination of a 3-week contingency management protocol (CM), which provides monetary reinforcement for reductions and abstinence from cigarette smoking, plus motivational enhancement (MET) results in improved smoking cessation outcomes among adolescents and young adult smokers. The comparison condition to CM is noncontingent reinforcement (NR), and the comparison condition to MET is progressive muscle relaxation (REL). Follow-up assessments are conducted at 1, 3, and 6 months following completion of the 3-week CM. This study will examine the efficacy of CM plus MET, with MET conceptualized as a means to motivate smokers to continue to maintain gains made during CM once reinforcers are removed. This five-year, NIDA-funded grant recently completed baseline data collection, with follow-up assessments scheduled for completion in the summer of 2007.
