Language Houses and Student Organizations

The Office of Residential Life maintains several residences designed to provide special housing opportunities and activities for students interested in foreign cultures and languages. These include Buxton International House that brings students from the United States and other countries together in one residence, French House for students interested in French language and culture, Harambee House for those interested in the politics and culture of Africa, and Hispanic House for Spanish language and Hispanic culture. In addition, language departments sponsor regular opportunities for informal conversation practice (e.g. German’s weekly Kaffeestunde, pain et fromage in French, Spanish-language tertulias, etc.) as well as annual social events and cultural activities (e.g. Slavic Festival, Chinese Speech Contest, Arabic Night, Deaf Awareness Week, etc.) Among the roughly 300 student groups on campus, several dozen are explicitly devoted to linguistic or ethnic communities or international affairs. Among many others these include the African Students Association, American Sign Language Club, Arab and Arab-American Student Organization, Awazzi: South Asian Journal of Arts, China Forum, El Concilio Latino, Filipino Alliance, Hellenic Students Association, Hindu Students Alliance, Brown International Organization, Italian Club, Japanese Cultural Association, Mariachi de Brown, OTTOMANIA!: Brown Turkish Student Association, Persian Club, Slavic Club, Southeast Asian Coalition, Students of the World, Brown Taiwan Association, Uganda Action Movement, and Ukrainian Club.
