Welcome to the Department of Classics

Like the discipline itself, Brown’s Department of Classics has a long and distinguished history. Classics faculty teach courses at all levels in the languages, literature, history, philosophy, and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, ranging from the beginnings through the medieval and Byzantine periods, as well as in Sanskrit and Modern Greek. In addition to a varied and challenging undergraduate program, the department offers graduate work in Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit studies leading to the degrees of M.A. and Ph.D. Classics is an inherently multi-disciplinary field, and students are encouraged to take courses in related areas of study such as Classical Archaeology, Comparative Literature, Egyptology and West Asian Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religious Studies as well as related programs such as Ancient Studies and Medieval Studies.
