She explores the intersection between poetics and mythology in the Greek tradition, especially in Homer, Archaic, and Hellenistic poetry. She is also interested in the theoretical problems concerning the definition and analysis of myths, and she has done some work in Greek linguistics. She has published papers and book reviews on all these subjetcs. Presently she is working on the language of the Homeric simile and the question of relative chronology in the Homeric poems.

Biography

She was born in Salamanca, Spain, whose university she attended as an undergraduate and graduate student. Both her degrees are in Classics (PhD 1990). She also taught there between the years 1990-1994 before coming to Brown as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 1997-8. Since 1998 she been Lecturer in the department of Classics, where she teaches a variety of courses (both in Greek and in translation) and continues with her research on Homer, Greek language, literature and mythology. She also has a professional degree in piano (from the conservatory of Valladolid, Spain).

Affiliations

She is a member of the American Philological Association, the Classical Association of New England, and the Spanish Society of Classical Studies (Sociedad Española de Estudios Clásicos).

Teaching

She regularly teaches courses in Greek at all levels on different authors (Plato, Aristophanes, Hellenistic Poetry, Elementary and Intermediate Greek), and Greek prose composition. She also offers courses in translation (Death in Ancient Greece, Epic Poetry from Homer to Lucan, Heroes and Heroism in graeco-Roman Antiquity and Beyond), and a variety of independent studies on different topics (Hesiod, Aratus, Homer, Greek orators, etc.) for both graduate and undergraduate students.
