Residency : Overview
Overnight "on-call" duties are an important facet of the residency training program and are assumed by the second, third, and fourth year residents. A "night float" system has been in effect since 1993 with the addition of the "short night float" in 2004. These two designate
d residents are responsible for clinical duties from 8pm to 8am and 5pm to 2am respectively, but have no daytime clinical responsibilities.
Instruction of the residents by the staff of the department is through clinical work, interdepartmental conferences, and a daily radiology conference. The daily conference at noon consists of both case discussions and a didactic lecture series that covers medical physics and the subspecialties of diagnostic radiology. Each academic year an outstanding group of radiologists visits the department to participate in the Grand Rounds program, which includes small group sessions with the residents. Residents are also encouraged to attend monthly scientific meetings of the New England Roentgen Ray Society.
Services and facilities that support graduate medical education in radiology include departmental and hospital libraries, resident office space, a computer learning center, a contemporary collection of the American College of Radiology syllabi and teaching files (film and digital), a full-time education secretary, and the Rhode Island Hospital Department of Graduate Medical Education.
Eligibility and Selection Policy:
Resident applications are accepted through ERAS, and interviews are granted after review of medical school transcript, letters of recommendation, personal statement and USMLE scores. In order to be eligible, the applicant is expected to complete medical school, pass USMLE step I and II exams, and complete an accredited PGY-1 year prior to the expected date of entering radiology residency. The applicant must also be eligible for licensure in Rhode Island.
After receipt of the Dean's letter, interviews are conducted by two members of the education committee, and all interviewed applicants are discussed among and ranked by the members of the education committee. The rank list is then submitted to the NRMP. Decisions regarding selection for interview and rank order are made without regard to the applicant's race, sex, creed, ethnic background or national origin.
