Residency : Overview
Our residency training program in diagnostic radiology enjoys both a regional and national reputation for excellence. Fully accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since 1974, the program provides a complete curriculum of training in
diagnostic and interventional radiology.
The four-year program is a competency-based curriculum that models residency training to the contemporary practice of diagnostic radiology. Clinical service rotations through the various subspecialty areas of radiology are divided into four-week blocks. In the first and second years, rotations include gastrointestinal/uroradiology, chest radiology, ultrasonography, musculoskeletal radiology, emergency radiology, body imaging, nuclear medicine, pediatric radiology, neuroradiology, vascular and interventional radiology, obstetrical sonography and breast imaging. In the third year, an elective at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC is provided. At least one additional elective month is available in either the the third or fourth year. Electives can be crafted by the resident to refine professional skills and to explore innovative career alternatives.
Completion of a basic science or clinical research project under the direction of a staff member is an essential requirement of the training program and presentation of original research at scientific meetings is encouraged. The training program provides regular evaluation and career guidance to each resident. On completion of the residency, the physician will be a well-rounded diagnostic radiologist and will be competent in basic angiographic and interventional techniques. Performance of the residents on both the written and oral American Board of Radiology certifying examinations has been excellent and ninety percent of graduates continue their formal education in fellowship programs.
