American Alligator

Lateral view of buccal oscillation in Alligator alligator. Buccal oscillation is thought to contribute to olfaction in crocodilians (non-ventilatory sniffing). Air flow measurements in alligators at rest and during locomotion have confirmed that these movements are non-ventilatory buccal oscillations rather than gular pumps.
