Lateral view of buccal oscillation in Terrapene carolina. Buccal oscillation is thought to contribute to olfaction in turtles (non-ventilatory sniffing). Air flow measurements in box turtles at rest and during locomotion have confirmed that these movements are non-ventilatory buccal oscillations rather than gular pumps.
