Community
Brown University is located on College Hill in a historic district of
restored colonial buildings overlooking the city of Providence. Founded
in 1764, the student body is currently composed of about 5400 undergraduates
and 1300 graduate students drawn from all regions of the United States
and many foreign countries. Providence is a city of many cultural and
recreational opportunities. Excellent restaurants, a nationally renowned
repertory theater, an art museum and galleries are all within a short
walk of campus. Music to satisfy nearly every taste is available in regular
concert series at the University and elsewhere in Providence.
The University has extensive varsity and intramural athletic programs
and excellent facilities are available to all students including an indoor
track; tennis, squash, and racquetball courts; an Olympic-sized pool;
and an indoor ice rink. Outdoor recreational opportunities are also abundant
in southern New England. Cape Cod is only an hour from campus, and good
beaches and boating are minutes from campus. Good hiking, biking, and
cross-country skiing can also be found near Providence.
Providence also has convenient bus and train service to Boston (1 hr)
and New York (3 hr).
Housing
University housing is available for single students in the Graduate Student
Center, which is within easy walking distance of our buildings. Other
housing is available near the University. The University offices for on-campus
and off-campus housing will assist incoming students in finding suitable
housing.
