David Rand
Professor of Biology

Ph.D., Yale University

Research in my laboratory focuses on molecular population genetics, molecular evolution, and ecological genetics. We are generally interested in the genetics of natural selection and comparative genomics. The work is primarily empirical, with a bias towards functional assays of animals in the lab and field. We use Drosophila as a model system for studies of nuclear-mitochondrial coevolution and the mitochondrial genetics of aging, and we use the acorn barnacle for studies of selection on enzyme polymorphisms in the field.

Typical experiments fall into two broad categories:

  1. functional studies where specific DNA sequence variants are competed under defined experimental conditions; and
  2. surveys of molecular markers where organisms are sampled from natural populations and the patterns of variation in DNA and proteins are used to study natural selection, gene flow and adaptation to the environment.
