Senior Projects

All concentrators are expected to complete a senior project, intended to be the culminating experience of their work in the concentration. This project may take one of three forms:

Honors Thesis

Candidates for an honors thesis must receive written permission of the instructor who will sponsor and guide the research for and writing of the honors thesis. The student must register for and complete, with distinction, EAST1930-1940.

Independent Research Course

A one semester independent research and writing course (EAST 1990) designed in consultation with the instructor, who may be any member of the East Asian Studies faculty willing to sponsor and guide the project. Written permission of the instructor must be obtained before a student will be allowed to register for EAST 1990.

Capstone Course

The student will select this course from among the courses offered in the East Asian Studies concentration at the 1000-level or above that will constitute a part of his/her program of study in the senior year. The permission of the instructor must be obtained before a student may designate a course as his/her capstone course. In the final research project for the course, the student will bring to bear particular interests or particular expertise developed during his/her concentration on the analysis of an issue or theme that emerges from within this course. The student should plan his/her schedule to allow for a considerable investment of time to be spent on this course, the end product of which will be a more substantial paper than would ordinarily have been required for the course.
