Letter to Prospective UEP Students

A Letter to Prospective UEP Students from the Program Director:

Dear Prospective Students,

The Master’s Program in Urban Education Policy at Brown University offers a unique and powerful approach to the education and training of the next generation of education policy leaders in our nation.

Embedded in Brown University’s rich tradition of using knowledge to solve societal challenges, our 12-month program integrates social science theories and research with field-based policy practices. You will learn from social scientists on the Education Department Faculty who possess expertise in the economics of education, human development, governance and politics, research design and methods, policy analysis, and other relevant topics. Clinical faculty from the Annenberg Institute for School Reform will bring evidence-informed policy practices from the urban settings to the classroom. The 9-month internship that is an integral part of the program will provide additional opportunities for hands-on learning in specific policy settings and a chance for UEP students and faculty to merge the lessons from theory and research with the everyday realities faced by the UEP intern in his or her placement. The UEP, with an expected cohort of about 20 students, will offer a supportive, mentoring environment that can foster your intellectual growth and development of the skills that modern policy analysis, design and implementation require.

Faculty members in the UEP program have high expectations for students who graduate from this well-structured, multidisciplinary program. We believe that UEP graduates will play a leading role in shaping the policy debates and reform initiatives that will impact our challenging urban school systems in the years to come. The analytic and research skills that you acquire will enable you to contribute to the work of civic, business, policy, and research organizations. Some of you will enhance the capacity of school districts to better serve their students, others will initiate innovative solutions to our most vexing problems in education, and many will play integral roles in policy processes that will impact the education-related outcomes of our nation’s urban youth. Your intellectual experience and your relationship with peers will build a life-long network of resources that can enhance your career advancement, and for students who plan on further study in the realm of education policy, the UEP program will provide a unique and solid scholarly base. Above all, your experience in the UEP will strengthen your ability to seek appropriate and fair solutions to many of our urban educational problems.

Choosing a graduate program is an important decision. Our faculty encourages you to explore the information on our website. We are at your service to answer any questions that you may have on the program. We are eager to hear from you and welcome your thoughts about your role in shaping the future of urban school systems.

Sincerely,

letter
