Urban Education Fellows Application
Introduction
The need for highly trained, reflective, culturally responsive teachers has never been greater in urban districts than it is today. Urban teachers work within a unique familial, cultural, political, and environmental context that influences the learning lives of their diverse student body. While we recognize that teaching is hard work, we know the rewards are considerable when we see our students succeed.
Urban Education Fellows Program Overview
Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Teaching program, Urban Education Fellows are expected to begin a three-year commitment to the Providence urban core serving in a full-time teaching position at the elementary or secondary level. A teacher is defined as a person who provides students direct classroom teaching, or classroom-type teaching in a non-classroom setting, or educational services directly related to classroom teaching such as school librarian or guidance counselor positions. In order to receive loan cancellation, fellows must be directly employed by a school system in the Providence urban core. A Providence urban core school system is defined as a school district that qualifies for federal funds within the year of employment by the fellow and/or a district whose enrollment is made up of 30% or more of low-income families.
Application Process
The admissions committee will consider your application to become an Urban Education Fellow along with your application to the MAT Program. To apply to the MAT program, please visit the Brown University Graduate School online application. To submit a UEF application, please complete the fields below and respond to the essay statement in no more than 1000 words. The MAT Program's due date for the UEF application is February 1, 2010.
