Urban Education Policy
Urban Education Fellows Application
Introduction
Urban Education systems are in transition. The future of urban schools - and the students they serve - depends on the skills and vision of those with the know-how to design and implement policies that benefit American’s most disadvantaged children. Until now, no program has been designed specifically to prepare students for the challenges of policymaking in urban education.
The Education Department at Brown University in collaboration with leading urban practitioners has created an innovative master’s degree program in Urban Education Policy. This intensive, twelve-month program will provide tomorrow’s policy-makers with the tools to analyze, design, and implement policies that promise a bright future for urban education. This experience will provide Urban Education Fellows the toolkit necessary to navigate through the complex urban issues they will face in their future work within Rhode Island’s urban core. Students examine the challenges and opportunities associated with urban education through multi-disciplinary coursework in data analysis and data-based decision making, economic theory and application, urban politics, human development, and the systems and structures of urban education contexts.
Urban Education Fellows Program Overview
Upon completion of the Urban Education Policy Master’s Program, Urban Education Fellows are expected to begin a three year commitment to the Providence school district and other urban core communities in Rhode Island serving in a full-time position within a public sector education organization or non-profit entity. In order to receive loan cancellation, fellows must be employed full time to work in a community that is designated as an urban core and contribute to policy improvement that impacts on schools whose enrollment is made up of 30% or more of low-income families.
Application Process
The due date for the UEP Program was February 1, 2009.
