Clio at the Table

Clio at the Table: A Conference on the Uses of History to Inform and Improve Education Policy

June 14th & 15th, 2007
Brown University Faculty Club
One Magee Street
Providence, RI 02912

The Clio at the Table conference will examine the uses of history to inform and improve education policy. The conference builds on the work of Carl Kaestle, Professor of Education, History and Public Policy at Brown University, who is retiring in June, 2007. As a scholar interested in contemporary as well as historical education problems, Carl has continually worked at the intersection of history and policy. In much of Carl's work there is an emphasis on the creation of urban school systems, issues of equity and diversity, federalism in education, and the federal role in education; the conference shares these emphases. Each of the sessions of the conference will explicitly reflect on the connection between history and public policy regarding these issues.

The conference is jointly sponsored by the Urban Education Policy Program at Brown University, the Annenberg Institute for School Reform, and the Spencer Foundation. Additional sponsors at Brown University include the Education Department, the Taubman Center for Public Policy Studies, and the History Department.
