Education 2350: Economics of Education

This course introduces students to the main economic theories and related applied work that inform education policy analysis. In so doing, the course combines economic theory, econometric studies, and education and institutional literature in an examination of current issues in U.S. education, particularly those issues that are most relevant to urban education. Topics include, but will not be limited to: theoretical explanations of the education investment decisions of individuals and society; an examination how the relationship between skills and labor market outcomes have changed over time and what have been the implications for schooling in the U.S.; what economic theory has to say about the “production” of education and the role of additional resources in that endeavor; the economics of teacher quality, class size, and other topical issues in education; and, how the economic perspective and analyses rooted in economic theory can inform debates about various school reform strategies such as standards-based education reform, school choice, and school finance reform.
