EN100 Syllabus & Outcomes

Welcome to EN100, a capstone course in Engineering, that will afford you an opportunity to work on a semester-long design project, utilizing skills you have learned in coursework up to this point. We expect you will be a senior when you enroll in EN100, but you may take EN100 as a junior, or soph (if you have a reasonable project in mind)

Course Sequence:
A. Generate an idea for the semester. Join a team, if possible.

B. Cooperate with the instructor in charge to develop specifications for your idea. The specifications may include a "standards test" that will demonstrate the capabilities of your product.

C. Make a budget and order materials as necessary.

D. Construct prototype.

E. Design Review.

F. Final demonstration, presentation and test against specifications.

OUTCOMES (ABET)
We expect that EN100 will:
(1) Give you experience managing a sizable project, from design idea to working prototype. Part of your management will be handling a budget.

(2) Possibly afford you the opportunity to work on a team, and exercise skills of cooperation and division of labor.

(3) Inform you about intellectual property issues, including patents, licensing and fair use of software.

(4) Let you develop communication skills: documentation, report writing and oral presentation.

(5) Give you a chance to design a product that meets specifications. The specifications, generated early in the semester, can be considered your requirements for a good grade.
