EN3 will make extensive use of computers in all phases of the course.  You will use Excel (and its solver) as well as Matlab to solve optimization problems, to perform calculus and algebra, and to plot graphs.

Computer Facility, room 191 BH:

Your Username
Your username will be automatically generated from up to the first six characters of your last name, followed by the first character of your first name, followed by your middle initial. Non-alphabetical characters such as hyphens and apostrophes will be skipped. If your last name is less than six characters long, your username will be shorter. For example, for a student named Josiah S. Carberry, the username would be “carberjs”.

Your Password
Your initial password will be automatically generated from your Banner ID. It will be the first letter of your last name in uppercase, followed by your complete Banner ID with a lowercase “b”. For example, for a student whose last name is Carberry and Banner ID is B12345678, the initial password would be “Cb12345678”. When you login for the first time you will be prompted to create your own password. The password that you choose must be at least eight characters long, cannot contain your username, and must contain at least three of the following four types of characters: A-Z uppercase, a-z lowercase, 0-9 base-10 digits, and non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. !, @, #, $).

If you find that you do not have an account as of  Monday, September, 12, an account may not have been set up for you. Fill out this form and bring it or email it to Ms. Stephanie Gesualdi on the 7th floor of BH (turn left as you come off the elevator).

In this class, you will be using the Excel solver. If you have Excel installed on your laptop you need to make sure the Solver is also installed. If you have a laptop running Windows, install the Solver by clicking on the Windows icon in the top left corner of your Excel window and then selecting “Excel Options”. Select “Add-Ins” from the left menu bar and find the “Solver Add-In” under the list of Inactive Application Add-Ins. Click “Go” on the bottom of the screen and check the box for “Solver Add-In”. This procedure might be slightly different on older versions of Excel. If you have a Mac, you will need to install the Solver as a separate program. You can download the program from

In this course, you will be using MATLAB R2012a version. Instructions for creating a Mathworks account (needed to download the latest version of MATLAB) can be found at: Please note that you will likely not receive an email from Mathworks telling you that your account is ready, despite the fact that they say you will! Check back in your Mathworks account after about 2-3 days…..

A matlab tutorial for the class can be found here.

Minc.m can be downloaded here. You should put this file in your Matlab working folder. The default working folder is Documents/MATLAB within your home directory. Note that you can also change your working folder from within Matlab - the working folder is shown and can be modified on the top of the Matlab window.
