What is IEEE?
IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and it is the world's largest leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Founded in 1884 by a handful of practitioners of the new electrical engineering discipline, the Institute today is comprised of more than 365,000 members in over 160 countries around the world.
Our vision is to advance global prosperity by fostering technological innovation and research, enabling members' careers, and promoting community worldwide. Members of the Institute share global access to new technical developments, formulate internationally recognized standards, and serve the community at large. The IEEE publishes nearly a third of the world's technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science and electronics. Furthermore, the Institute is a leading developer of international standards that underpin many of today's telecommunications, information technology and power generation products and services. Each year, over 100,000 technical professionals attend the more than 900 conferences sponsored or cosponsored by the IEEE. From microelectronics and microwaves to sensors and security, IEEE conferences cover relevant topics that showcase the depth and breadth of members' technical fields. (source: www.ieee.org)
The IEEE is the world's largest technical society, bringing members access to the industry's most essential technical information, networking opportunities, career development tools, and many other exclusive benefits. Member benefits include access to IEEE memberNet, IEEE's online member directory, monthly technical publications such as the IEEE Spectrum Magazine, IEEE.tv, an internet-based broadcasting network delivering special-interest programming about technology and engineering, and IEEE Xplore Digital Library, a digital library providing full text access to the world's highest quality technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, and electronics. Finally, for IEEE Student members, the IEEE offers, in conjunction with Microsoft, a wide selection of development software through the Microsoft Software Offer for IEEE Student members program.
What is Brown University IEEE Student Chapter?
The Brown University IEEE Student Chapter (or simply "Brown IEEE") is a student group with the mission of providing all undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering and related fields with useful resources for their academic, technical and professional development. It was reestablished in 2009 by a group of Brown seniors -all IEEE Student members and electrical engineering majors- who felt the need of a cohesive society which gives students the opportunity to meet and learn from fellow students, faculty members and professionals in technological sectors.
As an official IEEE Student Chapter (or Branch), Brown IEEE is affiliated and supported by the IEEE and is a member of Region 1 - USA and Providence, RI in particular. It is worth noting that IEEE Student Branches have been established at over 1,500 universities and colleges throughout the world; a fact that makes IEEE the largest and most recognized academic society for Electrical and Computer Engineering students.
We invite all students from the Engineering and Computer Science Departments, as well as, everyone with a keen interest in technology to join our group and participate in our events. Our activities range from academic and professional lectures/seminars to social and networking events and joint ventures with other groups. We coordinate special projects and participate in technology competitions and we try to organize tours and field trips of technological and research nature. Brown IEEE also throws career recruiting events with companies in the electrical and computer engineering sector and sponsors some of our members to participate in one regional IEEE Conference per academic year. Finally, we promote the ideals and values of the IEEE and we recruit new members by emphasizing the benefits once they join this highly valued community.
