Research Interests
Various creative nonfiction genres, especially memoir, the personal essay, and literary journalism with an emphasis on narrative development and structure; writing fiction; contemplative studies.
Professional Accomplishments
As a veteran of the publishing industry, Lauren Sarat worked as an assistant editor at Picador USA/St. Martin's Press, and with the literary agency, Sobel Weber Associates. Prior to working in publishing, she was a bookseller in traditional stores like Three Lives & Co. in New York City, and also worked as a freelance features editor with barnesandnoble.com. Since leaving Manhattan in 2001, she has taught creative nonfiction and fiction workshops for adults at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and also taught creative writing at the University of Connecticut, Rhode Island College, and Rutgers University. Her short story, "Russian Lessons," was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and "Tejas" was a finalist in the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest. Her fiction and poetry was published in Shenandoah, New York Stories, Anonymous, The Plum Creek Review, Turnstile, and is forthcoming in Confrontation. Her nonfiction has appeared in apt, Tomyex.com, and Rhode Island Monthly. The radio literary journal, The Lumberyard, which has been featured on Connecticut Public Radio, recently aired her short works, "Matinee," "The Break-Up Flowers," and "Condiments and Other Sundries."
