An Associate Professor of English Literature at Brandeis University, John Plotz is best known for The Crowd: British Literature and Public Politics (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2000) and a number of important articles on such topics as William Morris's romances, Victorian diamond narratives, Chartist literature, thing theory, and spectacle in Thomas Hardy. His talk comes from a book ms., Portable Properties: Problems of Cultural Transmission in Victorian Greater Britain, forthcoming in 2007.
