Procedures for Admission to the Honors Program
in Literatures and Cultures in English
Applications to the Honors Program in Literatures and Cultures in English must be submitted no later than the second semester of a student's junior year. The deadline for the 2008-09 academic year is Thursday, April 9, 2009.
The application procedure consists of the following steps:
1. If you have not yet declared your concentration for Literatures and Cultures in English, see Professor Stephen Foley, the Literatures Honors Advisor, to complete the concentration declaration form, and submit a copy of the Registrar's internal academic transcript of grades for courses completed at Brown or transferred for credit.
2. Complete the Literatures Honors Program application and submit it to the department as early as possible (but no later than April 9) in the spring semester of your junior year. Forms are available online and in the English Department office at 70 Brown Street.
3. Arrange for two letters to be submitted to Professor Foley by the application deadline: (a) A letter of recommendation and support from the English faculty member who has agreed to serve as your Honors advisor, and (b) a letter of recommendation from a professor from whom you have taken an English course. (If necessary, letters may come from faculty in related departments. Letters from teaching assistants may only serve as supplementary recommendations.)
4. Provide a brief sample of your critical writing. No more than five to seven pages is needed (a course paper, for example).
5. Submit a one-page description of your proposed project signed by the faculty member who has agreed to serve as your Honors advisor.
Applications must be submitted by Thursday, April 9, 2009. Students who are studying off campus are expected to meet the application submission deadline. Students planning to be abroad during the spring semester of the junior year should consider submitting all application materials before leaving campus in December.
Applications will be evaluated and candidates will be informed of the decision before the start of registration for fall courses. Students whose applications have been accepted should register for ENGL1991 for the fall semester 2009.
Application materials may be left with Jane Donnelly in the English Department office.
