S4 colloquium
Friday, February 20th at noon
PSTC conference room
David Wong (George Mason University) will talk about "Measuring Segregation: From Spatial, to Local and Individual."
Professor Wong is well known for his early efforts to develop measures of segregation that take spatial location into account. His presentation will review how we think about segregation, and it will lay out reasons to see it as a characteristic of a person rather than a neighborhood or city. This is an important topic for researchers in many fields who study segregation either as an outcome or as a causal factor.

Internships & Opportunities______
SEE-U
The SEE-U program is designed to expose students to ecological fieldwork in unique and interesting natural settings. The "real-world" laboratories of tropical, temperate and endangered ecosystems allow for a first hand knowledge and understanding that could be elusive in the more "traditional classroom." The SEE-U faculty engages students to think about the broader implications of the experience to issues of biodiversity, climate change, and sustainability.
Upon completion of the program, students receive undergraduate credits from Columbia University; these credits may be used to fulfill one to two-semester of your core science requirement. The SEE-U program also fulfills courses in the Skills and Systems area of the Special Concentration in Sustainable Development as well as in the Practicum. Students should speak with their Sustainable Development advisor if they have any questions. SEE-U is also open to non-Columbia students from across the nation.
In addition to projects done on a team basis, students also work on individual projects. For more explanation of the curriculum, you can go to:

Fellowship is available! All you have to do is fill out the fellowship section of the application. Our application deadline is March 1st, 2009. Applications will be considered as they are received and there are a limited number of spaces available for our sites in Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Black Rock Forest, New York so apply early! Internship in Environmental Education, San Mateo Outdoor Education
Gain Skills in Natural History Interpretation, Youth Supervision and Guidance, Leadership, Instructional techniques. Interns at SMOE receive a stipend of $275.00 per week, and room and board.
San Mateo Outdoor Education is a five-day resident outdoor education program for fifth and sixth grade students from the San Mateo County area. Our site is situated in the Redwood forest in the Santa Cruz mountains with over 1000 acres of natural wonders to explore with our students. The California coast provides us with exceptional opportunities to discover sea life in the tidepools, watch the migration of Gray Whales, go birding at a major stop over along the Pacific Flyway, visit colonies of seals, and explore the magnificent coastline.
The SMOE Internship involves:
- Teaching the major concepts of the program to the fifth and sixth grade students.
- Enforcing safety and discipline standards.
- Counseling students.
- Assisting in supervising and evaluating high school cabin leaders.
- Serving as a link between teachers, cabin leaders, and students.
Ultimately, we wish to provide an environmental education experience, which brings about a greater social awareness of students from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and increases students’ knowledge and appreciation of nature. There is a training period during which the Interns become familiar with the program content. The internship period is a full school year. This includes a variety of workshops, staff bonding activities, and general orientation of the site. During the year, a variety of in-services, workshops, and field trips will be held.
