Arlene Blum, Founder and Executive Director of the Green Science Policy Institute
The Fire Retardant Dilemma: Fire Safety, Human Health and the Global Environment
Wednesday, February 18th at 6pm
Salomon Center, Main Green, Room 203
Arlene Blum, a biophysical chemist, carried out research in the 1970s that contributed to removing cancercausing tris flame retardants from children's sleepwear. Such chemicals can cause neurological and reproductive impairments, thyroid abnormalities, endocrine disruption, and/or cancer. They can bioaccumulate up the food chain and persist in humans, wild animals, and the environment. Blum will describe her research and policy work to protect health and the environment while maintaining fire safety. Currently, Blum is working with a global team of scientists and NGOs to stop hundreds of millions of pounds of unneeded toxic fire retardant chemicals being added to consumer products worldwide.

The Sevilleta LTER is seeking applicants for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). Application deadline is March 20, 2009. We will be looking for 10 REU students for the summer of 2009.
This interdisciplinary REU Site Program at the Sevilleta LTER in central New Mexico will train ten undergraduate students who will conduct independent research under the guidance of UNM faculty in Biology and Earth and Planetary Sciences. The summer program includes a seminar series, a journal club, an annual symposium, professional development workshops, ethics training, and fieldtrips. Students will conduct independent research at the Sevilleta, and present results at the annual research symposium. They will also attend a weekly seminar and journal club, and interact with visiting speakers. The program includes faculty in ecology, the geosciences, and meteorology. Working at the LTER site invites close interactions among students, faculty, and graduate students.
Lodging and laboratory space for REU students will be provided by the University of New Mexico Sevilleta Field Station at NO COST. In addition, candidates chosen will receive a stipend of $4500 during the 11-week summer program (June1-August 14 2009). We will also refund travel costs to and from the UNM Sevilleta Field Station up to $500.
Applications will be accepted from students at any stage of their undergraduate program (freshman to senior) and any discipline, so long as the applicant is interested in conservation biology and ecology. Students are not eligible if they have completed an undergraduate degree by summer 2009. We welcome applications from students at four year colleges, students that are the first member of their family to attend college, non-traditional students, and students from traditionally underrepresented groups. Students must be U.S. Citizens. Application information can be found by visiting http://sev.lternet.edu/REU

Informational Meeting for Rainwater Harvesting Project in Kerala, India
Tuesday, February 10, 8pm in Barus & Holley 190
The Brown Engineers without Borders has just initiated a project to serve a local population with clean drinking water by capturing rainfall in Kerala, India. The project will directly address a crucial need of clean water in the community. We will work directly with local community members and organizations to design an appropriate rainwater harvesting system and train a local group in their construction. The project team is in need of members comfortable in an interdisciplinary environment that would like to gain experience initiating and carrying out a humanitarian project in Kerala, India.

Primary Contacts: Peter Boyer (Peter_Boyer@brown.edu) and Christina Tang (Christina_Tang@brown.edu)

NSF Grant with HERO
The Clark University Human-Environment Regional Observatory (HERO) undergraduate research program has just been awarded a major NSF grant to take HERO to the national level.
Our URL is: http://www.clarku.edu/hero where students can find a brochure and all sorts of information. This summer we will be conducting a set of projects that use remote sensing, to examine either Massachusetts forests or suburban Boston lawns and associated water management concerns. Some of our inquiries will be grounded entirely in remote sensing, while others will use remote sensing to answer landscape ecology or social science research questions. Thus we value a range of student backgrounds, including not only GIScience but also human and environmental geography, and related fields.
Students will be paid $4000 for 8 weeks, $300/wk for room/board, transportation costs to/from Worcester, and, if their research productivity is good, an expenses-paid trip to the March 2010 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers (in D.C.) to present their research results.
Application deadline is Sunday March 1.
There are no formal prerequisites for students to be accepted into the HERO program save an inquisitive mind and a willingness to learn. Of course, some background in urban studies, landscape ecology, and/or remote sensing is helpful. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. NSF is keen that we succeed in matriculating women and persons from other underrepresented groups.
