Geological Sciences Faculty Positions
TENURE TRACK FACULTY APPOINTMENT, CLIMATE MODELING, DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES, BROWN UNIVERSITY
The Department of Geological Sciences at Brown University announces a tenure-track faculty position in climate modeling. We seek to integrate climate and paleoclimate modeling as a component in our Earth System History research group, which is a leader in the use of multi-proxy records to understand climate change and environmental response from deep time through the present. We invite applications from climate modelers with fundamental training in ocean, atmosphere, and/or climate dynamics and who could enhance Brown’s strengths in paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, biogeochemistry, environmental change, planetary processes, and regional climate modeling and prediction. Experience in the application of climate system models and/or models of varying complexity to paleoclimate problems is preferred. This appointment will have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues in Brown’s Center for Computation and Scientific Visualization, Department of Applied Mathematics, Center for Fluid Dynamics, Environmental Change Initiative, Center for Environmental Studies, and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program and enjoy a commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Appointment is expected at the Assistant Professor level. However, applications and nominations of exceptional candidates at higher ranks will also be considered.
To apply, please email in PDF format a letter of interest addressed to Jim Russell (Chair of the Search Committee), a current CV, statements of research and teaching interests, and contact information for at least three references (five references for candidates at higher rank) to ESHsearch@Brown.edu. Candidates' referees will be contacted directly by the Search Committee. Applications must be received by Dec. 16, 2011, in order to receive full consideration, but the search will remain open until the position is closed or filled. A Ph.D. is required at the time of the appointment. The anticipated start date of the position would be July 1, 2012.
Brown University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. We welcome applications from minority or female candidates.
Tenure-Track Faculty Appointment
Planetary Remote Compositional Analysis
Department of Geological Sciences
Brown University
The Department of Geological Sciences at Brown University invitesapplications for a tenure-track faculty appointment in Planetary Remote Compositional Analysis. The emphasis of this position is on the application of experimental and quantitative
analytical approaches to the characterization, analysis and understanding of remotely sensed spectroscopic data to address critical problems in planetary sciences. Such problems might include the composition of materials comprising planetary bodies, the physical and chemical weathering of surfaces, and the nature of planetary processes. Analysis of field data and spacecraft data in addressing such problems is also strongly encouraged. Available facilities for such research include the Reflectance Experiment Laboratory, a facility permitting high-quality emission and reflectance spectroscopic measurements from 0.3-50 microns. Candidates should complement our current planetary
science strengths in planetary evolution, volcanism, impact cratering, climate history, and remote sensing, as well as departmental focus areas of Earth system history, solid Earth
dynamics, and Earth and planetary materials and processes. The successful candidate will maintain an active, externally-funded research program and enjoy a commitment to teaching
at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Appointment is expected at the Assistant Professor level, although exceptional circumstances could warrant appointment as Associate
Professor. A Ph.D. degree is required, and postdoctoral experience is considered important. Applicants should forward a curriculum vita, descriptions of research and teaching interests,
and three letters of reference to: James W. Head, Chair, Search Committee, Department of Geological Sciences, Brown University, Providence, RI at planetarysearch@brown.edu.
Inquiries and other communications may be directed to the same address. Applications received by June 15th, 2011 will receive full consideration, but the search will remain open until the position is closed or filled. The start date for this position is July 1st, 2012, pending final administration and budgetary approval. Brown University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
Postdoctoral Positions in Geological Sciences
Post-doctoral Research Associate Program in Geological Sciences
The Department of Geological Sciences at Brown University invites applications for its postdoctoral research associate program. The Department seeks outstanding candidates in the field of Earth and planetary sciences, with preference given to applicants whose research addresses key questions in Earth composition, structure, dynamics, deformation and material properties. Postdoctoral associates are encouraged to pursue their own research interests, but close interaction with Brown Geological Sciences faculty is expected. Additional program information and a description of research and facilities in the Department can be found at http://brown.edu/Departments/Geology.
These competitive, institutionally-supported postdoctoral positions are awarded for a one-year period, with anticipated extension for a second year. The initial annual stipend is $53,500 and a research/travel fund of $5,000 is provided in each year.
Applications and reference letters should be emailed (in PDF format) to geopostdocsearch@brown.edu no later than January 9, 2012. Applications should include a brief proposal for the research to be carried out at Brown (with identification of a Brown faculty sponsor), a statement of research accomplishments, and a curriculum vitae. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be emailed separately. Decisions will be made in Spring, 2012, for a position start date as early as July 1, 2012. Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. or should be 2012 degree candidates. Completion of the Ph.D. is required by the time of the appointment.
Brown University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. We encourage applications from minority and women scientists.
