Description: Based on the story of the infamous Steglitz student tragedy, a group of romantic-thinking, outside-of-the-box-living 20-somethings make a pact about how tragically far they'd go for love. Aside from their shared passion for parties and love, the main characters have little in common. The brilliant, shy, poetic Paul is a loner from the working class, while his best friend, Guenther, is a wealthy gay boy from the countryside. Then Guenther invites Paul home to the rich countryside for the weekend -- a weekend of limitless love, sex, bohemian-style partying, jealousy, rationale, and a completely unexpected outcome.

Description: The place is East Berlin, the year is 1984, and it all begins with a simple surveillance assignment: Capt. Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe in a restrained, yet deeply felt performance), a Stasi officer and a specialist in this kind of thing, has been assigned to keep an eye on Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch, Black Book), a respected playwright, and his actress girlfriend, Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck, Mostly Martha). Though Dreyman is known to associate with the occasional dissident, like blacklisted director Albert Jerska (Volkmar Kleinert), his record is spotless. Everything changes when Wiesler discovers that Minister Hempf (Thomas Thieme) has an ulterior motive in spying on this seemingly upright citizen. In other words, it's personal, and Wiesler's sympathies shift from the government to its people--or at least to this one particular person. That would be risky enough, but then Wiesler uses his privileged position to affect a change in Dreyman's life. The God-like move he makes may be minor and untraceable, but it will have major consequences for all concerned, including Wiesler himself.
DVD/DR01.01 | Dresen, Andreas | Halbe Treppe / Grill Point (2002)
Language: German (with English, French, Spanish, German subtitles) | Format: DVD/PAL
Comments: Zone 2 | ||||
Description: A pair of couples in thier late 30s experience life in the small German burg of Frankfurt-Oder (near the Polish border) while struggling to make ends meet in this character driven comedy drama from director Andreas Dresen. Caterer Uxe (Axel Prahl) makes his meager living out of a small business located "halfway up the stairs" (which also serves as the literal English translation of the title) as the viewers bear witness to his daily struggles via cast-improvised scenes and by interviews with the main characters intercut with the narrative. Meanwhile, a pair of running gags concerning depressed DJ 'Magic' Chris (Thorsten Merten) and a band named 17 Hippies serve to lighten the mood of this Mike Leigh-influenced effort that was shot on digital-video.
DVD/DR01.03 | Dresen, Andreas | Sommer vorm Balkon (2006)
Language: German (with German/English/Spanish/French subtitles) | Format: DVD/PAL
Comments: Zone 2 | ||||
Description: Andreas Dresen's microscopic examination of the humdrum lives of Katrin (Inka Friedrich) and Nike (Nadja Uhl), best friends who live in the same Berlin apartment building, is a pointedly unglamorous slice of life that could be set in any urban neighborhood where real estate prices haven't gone through the roof. Low-key realism is so meticulously maintained that "Summer in Berlin" feels somewhat trivial. There is nothing larger here than meets the eye. It is "Sex and the City" on a stringent budget with fewer characters, in which Mr. Big is Mr. Sneaky Loser, and the only coveted shoes are the 120-euro running sneakers Max desperately desires but his mother can't afford.
DVD/DR01.02 | Dresen, Andreas | Willenbrock (2005)
Language: German (with German/English subtitles) | Format: DVD/PAL
Comments: Zone 2, Drama
Description: Bernd Willenbrock is a car dealer at Magdeburg, East Germany, a small, but nonetheless successful and well-reputed businessman who has made his way in the post-communist society. A sympathetic wife, a nice house, a fast car, a house on the countryside - these are the attributes of material success that count for Willenbrock. Then, things slowly begin to move into a different direction: Although he loves his wife, Willenbrock is attracted by a young student who keeps him at distance. To do her a favor, he gives her father the job of a night-watchman. But one night, the watchman gets cruelly beaten by burglars. And a bit later, the burglars come to Willenbrock's house at night. This is where the illusion of a quiet, secure, and self-satisfied life reaches an end. Things start to go wrong, well-known procedures don't work anymore, hopes and expectations of all kinds turn into disappointments. Willenbrock is challenged by an increasing feeling of lost safety and control, and he has to find a way to cope with that.

DVD/FA19.04 | Fassbinder, Rainer Werner | Stationmaster's Wife, The
Language: | Format: DVD/
Description: Drama of post-WWI Bavaria based on Oskar Maria Graf's novel Bolweiser, was originally presented as a three-hour-plus event for German television. In preparing his theatrical cut, director Rainer Werner Fassbinder shaved away the subplots and supporting characters to focus tightly on the story of railway stationmaster Bolweiser (Kurt Raab) and his philandering wife Hanni (Elisabeth Trissenaar). Set in late-1920s Bavaria, Bolweiser is a Nazi party man surrounded by grotesque, toadying underlings at the station but is pathetically servile to his increasingly frustrated, unhappy wife. Disgusted by her weak-willed husband, she finds passion in the arms of the butcher. Bolweiser ignores the town gossip and even perjures himself to defend his wife in a trial--an act which later dooms him. Exquisitely photographed (by Michael Balhaus) and beautifully designed, Fassbinder's lush, romantic style suffuses his caustic portrait of the self-destructive Bolweiser (a painfully perfect performance by Raab), and the petty small-town citizens who seal his fate. Even as Bolweiser sinks to the depths of self-pity, Fassbinder's gorgeous, shimmering canvas makes the small-minded doings look so much more tawdry.

Description: An unusual psychological spy thriller, Walk on Water follows Israeli agent Eyal (Lior Ashkenazi, from the superb romance Late Marriage) as he tries to learn from a German brother and sister (Knut Berger, Push and Pull, and Caroline Peters, Schone Frauen) whether or not their grandfather, a Nazi commander, is still alive--but his growing friendship with the pair forces him to grapple with his wife's suicide only months before. Walk on Water grapples with racial prejudice and homophobia without once seeming preachy; surprisingly, the spy storyline introduces these issues naturally, as Eyal's hostility towards Arabs and his blithe view of Nazi war criminals are central to his character. Ashkenazi is charismatic and subtle; his bedroom eyes and understated smolder make him something of an Israeli Clive Owen.

The play was first performed in Zürich in 1962 and has remained popular in the decades since. It was translated into English by James Kirkup, and published in the US in 1964 by Grove Press, under its Evergreen imprint

Description: A man and a woman live in a village not far from Berlin. Out here, it feels as though the city were miles away. The couple have loved each other since they were children. They are inseparable. Both are now in their early thirties; he is a welder and a member of the auxiliary fire brigade. She works a few hours a week as a home help and sings in the choir. Their blissful relationship is so untrammelled by life's little ups and downs that others regard them with a mixture of astonishment and mistrust. They give the impression of being as innocent and unsuspecting as a couple of children. One day, the man goes on a business trip to a large town with the fire brigade. After a night of heavy drinking and carousing he wakes up in another woman's apartment. He can barely remember what went on. His efforts to find out what did occur lead to a passionate affair.

It depicts his notorious lack of discipline, his carefree lifestyle, and the rock star-like status he attained during his lifetime. Not surprisingly, given the era in which the film was made, political discussion is largely limited to the tragedy of war. Description: One of the key political events of the late 20th century fails to distract a man who is having a row with his parents in this comedy from Germany. The film takes place in the fall of 1989 in SO36, a neighborhood in West Berlin adjacent to the Berlin Wall, shunted into a corner and largely ignored. It is home to an oddball community of Bohemians and outsiders who pay little mind to the world around them. Frank Lehmann (Christian Ulmen) is a bartender who serves beer at nights to the motley citizens of SO36 and is oblivious to most everything except his lackadaisical pal Karl (Detlev Buck) and his ill-tempered girlfriend Katrin (Katja Danowski). A visit from Frank's parents throws his simple life into disarray, especially since his letters home led them to expect a far grander life than he's leading, and with this sudden chaos in his life, Frank barely notices that big things are happening on the other side of the wall.

Now, near 60, living on Mt. Tamalpais, Dengler tells his story: a German lad surviving Allied bombings in World War II, postwar poverty, apprenticed to a smith, beaten regularly. At 18, he emigrates and peels potatoes in the U.S. Air Force. He leaves for California and college, then enlistment in the Navy to learn to fly. A quiet man of sorrows tells his story: war, capture, harrowing conditions, escape, and miraculous rescue. Where did he find the strength; how does he now live with his memories?

Description: Inspired by a famous 1971 psychological experiment, Oliver Hirschbiegel's German-language movie The Experiment finds a group of 20 volunteers randomly divided into 12 prisoners and eight guards and asked to play out their roles for a fortnight while scientists study their reactions. A conflict arises between undercover reporter Fahd (Moritz Bleibtreu), a con with a hidden agenda, and the apparently mild-mannered Berus (Justus von Dohnanyi), a guard with a megalomaniac streak. The film begins as a psychological drama as ordinary people settle into the game, with joking displays of resistance by the "prisoners" greeted with increasing brutality from the "guards," but detours into suspense and horror as Fahd, who needs the experiment to get out of hand in order to make his story more saleable, deliberately ratchets up the tension between the factions only to see the situation spiral nightmarishly out of control as various test subjects in both camps edge closer to snapping.

Language: German (with English subtitles) | Format: DVD/NTSC
Comments: Zon 1 | ||||
Description: The riveting subject of Downfall is nothing less than the disintegration of Adolf Hitler in mind, body, and soul. A 2005 Academy Award nominee for best foreign language film, this German historical drama stars Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) as Hitler, whose psychic meltdown is depicted in sobering detail, suggesting a fallen, pathetic dictator on the verge on insanity, resorting to suicide (along with Eva Braun and Joseph and Magda Goebbels) as his Nazi empire burns amidst chaos in mid-1945. While staging most of the film in the claustrophobic bunker where Hitler spent his final days, director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Das Experiment) dares to show the gentler human side of der Fuehrer, as opposed to the pure embodiment of evil so familiar from many other Nazi-era dramas. This balanced portrayal does not inspire sympathy, however: We simply see the complexity of Hitler's character in the greater context of his inevitable downfall, and a more realistic (and therefore more horrifying) biographical portrait of madness on both epic and intimate scales

Description: A man seeking a better life for his family may have to lie to get it -- and pay handsomely for that privilege -- in this realistic drama. Sehmuz (Duzgun Ayhan) and his wife, Delal (Fidal Firat), are a Kurdish couple who have fled political persecution in their homeland and are seeking asylum in Switzerland for themselves and their three children. While Sehmuz's authentic tale of woe would seem to be enough to convince Swiss authorities to allow him to stay, his friend, Aziz (Nurettin Yildiz), confronts him with the ugly truth that 90 percent of Kurdish refugees are turned away by the Swiss government on the grounds that their claims don't appear plausible. Aziz, who is also seeking asylum in Switzerland, has hired a "storyseller," who for a price will manufacture a tale (with appropriate documents to match) that's likely to convince immigration authorities to grant a exile residency papers. Delal is opposed to this notion and tells Sehmuz that he should tell his interviewer the truth, but Sehmuz decides Aziz is has a point, and sells many of the family's valuables to pay a storyseller (Walo Luond) to spin a believable tale for him. However, Sehmuz discovers his investment may have been for naught when Aziz's storyseller fails to deliver the goods and his request for asylum is denied. Duzgun Ayhan, himself a political refugee now living in Sweden, won the Best Actor honors at the 2001 San Sebastian Film Festival.

Language: silent | Format: DVD/NTSC
Description: Thirty years ago, at a scientific conference, Prof. Manfeldt presented his theory on the existence of gold on the Moon. It was greeted with laughter by the assembled academics. Today, Herr Helius has ambitious plans to build a spaceship... and take it to the Moon! Windegger, his chief engineer, will be going, and so will Prof. Manfeldt, now living in a cramped garret alone with his theory. But there are disagreements with the financiers who insist that their man Turner also accompany the flight... The unmanned Rocket H 32 brings back valuable information from the dark side of the Moon. Helius is upset by the news of Windegger's engagement to the pretty Friede. And the financiers have a secret agenda: to control the world's gold supply... Finally, the Spaceship "Friede" is ready as it rolls out on its gantry for takeoff. The staged rocket works as planned, but the acceleration is fierce. As they approach the Moon, they discover a stowaway on board, Gustav, a little boy...
DVD/LA01.02 | Lang, Fritz | Metropolis / Metropolis (1927)
Language: silent | Format: DVD/NTSC
Description: Fritz Lang's Metropolis belongs to legend as much as to cinema. It's a milestone of sci-fi and German expressionism. Yet the story makes minimal sense, and the "theme" belongs in a fortune cookie; to experience the film's pagan power, you have to see the movie. But for decades we couldn't, not really--not with so many versions, all incomplete, often in public-domain prints like smudged photocopies. This Murnau Foundation restoration changes all that. Some shots, scenes, and subplots may be lost forever, but intertitles indicate how they fit into the original continuity and the characters' individual trajectories. Most crucially, the images are crisp, vibrant, and three-dimensional instead of murky and flattened. The composite sequences (the Tower of Babel, a sea of lusting eyes) have been restored to their hallucinatory ferocity. And there's one moment when you can see a bead of sweat roll down a man's cheek--in medium long-shot.

Description: Tough stuff from director Fritz Lang (M), making his first American film with this 1936 story of an innocent man (Spencer Tracy) who escapes a lynch mob and then orchestrates his apparent murder at their hands. Tracy is superb, and the film is uncompromising, until studio interference takes some of the wind out of Lang's sails right at the end. But as the portrait of a character who comes to reflect the destiny he is trying to avoid, this is still essential Lang and a pre-noir classic.

Language: silent | Format: DVD/NTSC
Description: The Man Who Laughs, based on the novel by Victor Hugo who also wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is a good example of this genre that essentially died with silent pictures. The plot involves the child of an English nobleman. When his father rebels against King James, the king has the child's face carved into a permanent grin. The child, named Gwynplaine, joins a carnival. He grows up alongside Dea, a blind girl who loves him. Both Conrad Veidt and Mary Philbin were experienced with this sort of film. He had roles in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Waxworks, she was the leading lady of the Phantom of the Opera. Philbin's Phantom co-star, Lon Chaney, was originally slated to play the lead in this film but studio battles prevented it and Veidt, who came over from Germany to act in Barrymore's The Beloved Rogue, stepped in. Both Veidt and Philbin give rather good performances, particularly Veidt who, due to makeup, could only use the upper half of his face to express emotion.
DVD/LE01.02 | Leni, Paul | Wachsfigurenkabinett, Das / Waxworks (1924)
Language: | Format: DVD/NTSC
Description: Lesser-known among silent German classics, Waxworks is a carnival of a movie inviting you to visit three distinct freak shows and sample the thrills and peculiarities each has to offer. A young poet (Wilhelm Dieterle, who became Hollywood director William Dieterle) is hired to pen "startling tales" about three figures on display in the Wachsfigurenkabinett. Somehow he and his boss's daughter (Olga Belajeff) win plum roles in each fantasia he concocts. The Arabian Nights episode, featuring Emil Jannings hamming it up as Caliph Haroun al-Raschid, boasts demented architecture and a blend of comedy and surrealism that inspired Douglas Fairbanks's Thief of Bagdad. Conrad Veidt, making a memorably mad Russian icon of Ivan the Terrible, towers amid episode 2's fiercely angular compositions. Then, still-unnerving double-exposure cinematography is used to bring "Spring Heel Jack" (Werner Krauss's version of Jack the Ripper) out of the realm of fantasy and menacingly into the real-world framing story.

Description: Both epic and heartbreakingly intimate, Nowhere in Africa begins with a Jewish woman named Jettel Redlich fleeing Nazi Germany with her daughter Regina, to join her husband, Walter, on a farm in Kenya. At first, Jettel refuses to adjust to her new circumstances (she brought with her a set of china dishes and an evening gown), while Regina adapts readily to this new world, forming a strong bond with her father's cook, an African named Owuor. But this is only the beginning of a series of uprootings, and as the surface of their lives is torn away, Walter and Jettel find they have little in common, and must--under tumultuous circumstances--build their marriage anew. With incredible skill and passion, Nowhere in Africa manages to bring you fully into every change in this family's life; it richly deserves the Academy Award® it received in 2002.

Language: | Format: DVD/NTSC
Description: This bio-pic is about Galileo, the 17th century Italian who laid the foundations of modern science. Galileo made himself one of the world's first telescopes and discovered the moons of Jupiter. He supported Copernicus' theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun. This brought him in conflict with the Catholic Church. By threatening him with torture, the Church forced him to recant his views in front of a tribunal, and sentenced him to house arrest. However, Galileo's trials and theories inspired others like Newton and Kepler to prove that the Earth was not the centre of the Universe. Some years ago, the Pope accepted that Earth does revolve around the Sun and issued a rare apology for what the Church had done to Galileo, i.e., the Catholic Church recanted!

Description: One of the most charming and romantic films around, this 1940 comic romance finds James Stewart (Vertigo, It's A Wonderful Life) working in a small shop in Budapest and longing for a girl to call his own. His coworker, Margaret Sullavan, feels the same, and soon they are both corresponding and falling in love with their respective pen pals. What they don't realize is that they are writing to and falling in love with each other, but the problem is that they can't stand each other in person. The beguiling nature of the mistaken identity formula that influenced countless films is done to perfection here, and the wry combativeness and delightful banter between the two leads makes this a very special film.

Comments: language options: English, German, French, Spanish
Description: Shot in 1990, this portrayal of life in East Berlin offers a snapshot of what life was like just before the wall came down and communism gave way to a more democratic way of life. The film follows the fortunes of architect Daniel Brenner (Kurt Naumann) as he attempts to design a thoroughly modern new part of the city, with the results coming at an enormous personal price for the young designer. The government doesn't like his scheme, his wife leaves him due to the length of time he is spending on the project, and his ideas are constantly being compromised by the artless bureaucrats in charge of executing the plans. Daniel's decaying life mirrors what is occurring to the city he loves, making this a powerful portrait of life under a communist regime.

Description: Three-time OscarÂ(r) nominee* Kirk Douglas is downright brilliant (The New Yorker)in this honest and gripping drama about a sleepy, occupied German town suddenly shocked awake by the brutal actions of four American soldiers. As timely today as it was shocking upon its release, Town Without Pity is an excellent productionone of the decade's finest jobs of filmmaking (Limelight) and will keep you on the edge of your seat! Attorney Steve Garrett (Douglas) is brought in to defend four enlisted men accused of attacking a 16-year-old girl. But if he's going to prevent their death sentences, he will have to turn the spotlight on the victim, Karin. Already immeasurably traumatized, Karin suddenly finds herself on the witness stand, attempting to justify her actions to Garrett, her stern father and a Town Without Pity. *Actor: Champion (1949),The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), Lust for Life (1956)

Description: Mannered, unassuming, and ultimately moving, writer-director Eric Mendelsohn's feature debut imbues a comic, bittersweet American character study with an almost European sense of weight and gravity. For Mendelsohn, the lives of dissatisfied Long Islanders can be downright mystical in their mundaneness -- a theory echoed not only by the dreamlike cinematography of Jeffrey Seckendorf, but also by the characters themselves. Over the course of a lengthy eclipse (subtly rendered through clever lighting tricks), the film reveals the tenuous bonds between its various families, and our hero, David Gold (Aaron Harnick), sheds his initial, off-putting solipsism and embraces his suburban roots.

Description: A wrenching look at history and humanity. The first feature film produced in Germany after World War II, it is set in Berlin just after the surrender, and the city is still being battered by air raids. The characters move through the half-destroyed husks of old buildings, and even simple acts like serving a meal at a table take on new meaning as the people try to put their lives back together. Susanne Wallner is a concentration camp survivor, eager to taste life again after her living death. Dr. Hans Mertens is a former German officer, unable to live with the guilt of what he and his former comrades have done. The two must quite literally learn to live side by side as they come to terms with the past and start to look toward the future.

DVD/WE02.01 | Weill, Kurt | / Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, The (1998)
Language: German | Format: DVD/NTSC
Description: This 1998 Salzburg Festival production of The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny does a difficult work proud, as Peter Zadek's staging makes the case for Kurt Weill's (and librettist-lyricist Bertolt Brecht's) epic dissection of consumerism and avarice as one of the most gripping 20th century operas. Soprano Catherine Malfitano, always a riveting singing actress, adds another memorable portrayal with her skillful portrait of Jenny, the whore with the heart of gold. Tenor Jerry Hadley embodies the role of our hero, Jimmy, admirably, and in a strong supporting cast, Gwyneth Jones and Roy Cornelius Smith are particularly outstanding. Conductor Dennis Russell Davies leads the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna to new musical heights, while the designers and technicians make this a visually accomplished Mahagonny. Warning: there's ample female nudity in the brothel scene (though entirely in keeping with Weill and Brecht's conception).

Description: Jan (Daniel Brühl, Ladies in Lavender) and Peter are the best friends behind the radical and mysterious group The Edukators, united by their passion to change the world, in "The funniest, most original movie I’ve seen all year." (David Edwards, The Daily Mirror). When the rich go on vacation, The Edukators break into their homes. They don’t steal, but simply rearrange everything, leaving the message "Your days of plenty are numbered." When Peter’s girlfriend Jule (Julia Jentsch, winner, Best Young Actress, 2005 Bavarian Film Awards) moves in, she joins them in their subversive activities. But when a rich businessman catches them in the act, they rashly decide to kidnap him. Faced with the values of the generation in power, they will see what kind of revolutionaries they are, if their friendship can survive, and discover if they truly work in the interest of the greater good, or just in their own self-interest.

Description: Tom Ripley has a sweet deal with an art forger. The forger creates the paintings; Tom sells them. But another criminal business associate wants Tom to go in for an even riskier enterprise: murder. Tom suggests his associate ask a local picture framer instead. That man has a fatal disease, or so it's rumored. More, he has a wife and kid that surely he wouldn't want to leave penniless. Let this picture framer be a hit man, and no one will suspect. The terminally ill craftsman may agree to the misdeed, and several more, but he'll end up needing Tom Ripley in a pinch.

Description: German filmmaker and former professional footballer (read: soccer player) Sönke Wortmann directs the family sports drama Das Wunder von Bern (The Miracle of Bern). The title is in reference to the unexpected German victory over the Hungarians at the 1954 World Cup in Bern, Switzerland. In the working-class Ruhr region of West Germany, the Lubanski family eagerly awaits husband and father Richard (Peter Lohmeyer) to be released from the Soviet POW camp. During his absence, mother Christa (Johanna Gastdorf) and daughter Ingrid (Birthe Wolter) have started up their own business, while son Matthias (Louis Klamroth) has developed an interest in soccer. He idolizes local player Helmut Rahn, but his father doesn't approve of it. Meanwhile, sports journalist Paul Ackermann (Lucas Gregorowicz) heads to Switzerland to cover the World Cup events. The finale at the climactic soccer game was re-created with professional players from the German Football Liga along with a 3-D stadium and CGI crowd.
