Seth Thorn studied philosophy, critical theory and viola performance at Northwestern. Upon graduating he travelled to Germany as a Fulbright research fellow and later completed an M.A. in political theory at the Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main.
Seth joined the Ph.D. program at Brown in Fall 2011. He belongs to a select group of doctoral students who are given additional financial and academic support, through the aegis of the Open Graduate Curriculum, to pursue Master's degrees in secondary fields. In addition to his doctoral pursuits in German, with special emphasis on the study of German philosophy and the philosophy of music and sound where it appears in that tradition, Seth is working towards an M.A. in Brown's Multimedia and Electronic Music Experiments (aka "MEME") program.
