About the History Department
As one of the first institutions in the United States to provide for historical studies, Brown’s Department of History has been marked through time by its high standards of scholarship and teaching. The history department houses a distinguished faculty and teaching staff at Brown University. Although the department has no single approach or pedagogic method, faculty members use methods of instruction most appropriate to the subject and to the students' level of knowledge. Currently, the department offers a wide variety of courses – ranging from the histories of classical, Greek, Roman civilizations to the histories of Europe, the Americas, and Asia – all concerned with changes of human experience through time. While certain courses may deal with special topics (e.g. 20th Century Science or Multi-Racial Societies in the Americas), others concentrate on the history of a particular country (e.g. Russia or France) or on a certain period of time (e.g. the Middle Ages or the Renaissance). By taking advantage of the variety of course offerings, students can engage in and develop broad perspectives on both the past and the present.
