Quite possibly the leading Lied baritone of his generation, Austrian Wolfgang Holzmair is an artist of rare communicative gifts. The Financial Times recently said “… no other singer of German song at the moment communicates so intently the rhythm and meaning of the poems.” Performing Franz Schubert’s epic song cycle Winterreise, Holzmair will be joined by his long-time recital partner Russell Ryan.
The songs represent the voice, and tell the story, of the poet as the spurned lover. Over the course of the cycle the poet slips away from his former beloved's house at night and makes his lonely way to a nearby village. The barren winter landscape mirrors the feelings of his broken heart.
Winterreise is one of the fundamentals of German Lied, and has strongly influenced not only the style but also the vocal method and technique in German classical music as a whole. As such it presents challenges even to the greatest singers.
