Barenboim-Said Foundation

In 2004, during the VI edition of the West-Eastern Divan Workshop, the Consejería de Cultura (Regional Ministry of Culture of the Autonomous Regional Government of Andalusia) established the Barenboim-Said Foundation. Through this Foundation, the proposal made by the President of the Junta de Andalucía (Autonomous Regional Government of Andalusia), Mr. Manuel Chaves to Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said came to life, therefore establishing in Seville, Spain, not only the siege of the West-Eastern Divan among other projects, but also of the Foundation itself.

The Foundation has the following aims:

  • To promote the spirit of peace, dialogue and reconciliation, primarily through music. In this spirit, the history of the peaceful coexistence of different cultures over the centuries in Andalusia is a central feature.
  • To promote music education based on the principle that music cannot be isolated from society.
  • To prepare and promote music education projects in Andalusia, Israel, Palestine and the Arab countries.

Barenboim-Said Foundation USA

The Barenboim-Said Foundation USA is a non-profit tax-exempt organization registered in the State of Delaware. The Foundation was established in 2004 for the sole purpose of raising funds for musical and cultural workshops and orchestras for highly talented young performers from both the Arab countries and Israel, and for the development of music educational programs for children of the region. The workshop has no connection with the politics, official governments and various political solutions of the area.

The Barenboim-Said Foundation USA is affiliated with the Fundacion Barenboim-Said in Spain. The US Foundation complements the work of the Spanish Foundation and raises additional funds to grant additional fellowships to the musicians, to buy badly needed instruments and for any other purpose relevant to the Foundation.
