Gepetto making Pinocchio

"After choosing the name for his Marionette, Gepetto set seriously to work to make the hair, the forehead, and the eyes. Fancy his surprise when he noticed that these eyes moved and then stared fixedly at him. Gepetto, seeing this, felt insulted and said in a grieved tone: "Ugly wooden eyes, why do you stare so?" There was no answer."

One major difference between these two works is the viewers' perspective. In Grimly's work the we have a closer, more intimate perspective of the scene where as in Kirk's illustration, we are further away from the characters yet the visual engagement between us and the whole scenery is clearer. Grimly's work is much edgier due to Pinocchio's evil smile while Kirk's Pinocchio seems more innocent and pure with the round child-like face and his hair parted on the side. The confused look of Gepetto, and the artists' intention to clearly demonstrate Pinocchio's long nose are visible in these two works.
