Pinocchio 3000, a futuristic version of Pinocchio released in 2004, depicts a robotic, rather than wooden, little boy. Gepetto, a renown inventor, built his son as his untimately toy-making project. As in Collodi's original text, Pinocchio goes on a journey directed by his different decisions in the face of various moral dilemmas. Many characters are similar to those in the original, such as Pinocchio, Gepetto (below), and the Blue Fairy, however many liberties are taken with additional characters, twisting them in small ways to create a more simple and futuristic plotline. Given that Pinocchio 3000 was meant as an attempt at a very "technologically advanced" society , the discontinuities between it and Collodi's original can more easily be overlooked than as in other versions, which feature a puppet.

Examining specific characters reveals the significant impact that the 1940 Disney version of the story had on society and storywriters alike. For example, Jiminy Cricket, a main character in Disney's film, was barely a presence in the original text. Rather than exclude a character which so many people have come to know and love over the past seven decades, the producers of Pinocchio 3000 chose to create a similar character, Spencer the cyberpenguin, to act as Pinocchio's moral guide. Liberties were also taken with the Fairy, who appears as the holographic fairy Cyberina (above), dressed in blue to create some element of continuity from the original. Villains were also used in this version, taking different forms than the usual Cat and Fox. Although many of the characters vary from Collodi's original ideas, they all work well to fit into the futuristic framework and storyline.
