The Maze of Technology

Proverbs for Paranoids, 2: The innocence of the creatures is in inverse proportion to the immorality of the Master.
-Thomas Pynchon, Gravity's Rainbow

Paranoid conspiracies have a natural tendency to grow. By their very nature they are secret, illegal and powerful. When one asks questions like "how come the police don't know about it?" the answer is invariably "They control the police."

In the middle ages this growth was kept in check. Influence in the church and in a few European states would be enough to give any cabal a decently tight grip on the world. Modern technology has vastly complicated this process. Important governments span the globe, breeding police forces and investigative bodies, and regulatory groups, each of which has some amount of influence. As these plots circle the globe they become entangled in larger webs of acronyms: CIA FBI KGB SS UN IRA NTSB UNESCO NSA AFESD LDC OSS NATO COG...

it is only in the modern world that conspiracies can reach their full potential. Only when surrounded by bureaucracy and technology and globalization can hyperplots truly transcend any human understanding, taking on a life of their own.

The Templars were momma's boys compared to Tristero and Impolex and Majestic-12.
