rollant helps with the vitakind problem

Karlamagnus is insulted by King Vitakind. He wants to take his revenge, but cannot cross the Rhine. He has hired various Frankish and Italian peoples to build a bridge; they have been working on it for three years, but it is still not finished.

Then [Karlamagnus] sent for the two fosterbrothers, Rollant and Oliver, and their host. They came at once to join King Karlamagnus, and there was a joyful meeting; he asked them to have the bridge built. They went there at once, and had the stone cut and brought to the river, and they laid each stone over the next and had lead poured among the stone, and used that for mortar; and they prepared two iron chains to bear the bridge across, and made the ends fast on land. And in half a year Rollant and Oliver got it all ready so that an army could easily cross it.

Then Rollant and Oliver went across, and all their host, and they had a great ditch cut, so that the Saxons would not be able to get an army across to King Karlamagnus; and they parepared lodgings roundabout. Karlamagnus then came over the bridge to Vesklara with his army.

King Vitakind was there, but he did not dare wait for them, but went to Trivers and besieged it for three years. Then Rollant and Earl Oliver and Bofi the Beardless went to Vesklara with three hundred thousand knights, and Rollant sent Bofi to the gate of the city with ten thousand knights. The man who was in charge of the city was named Saevini; he came out to meet them with the townsfolk, and when Rollant saw this, he hurried to him, and took the conquered city, and Saevini submitted to them.

Then Rollant put Bofi in charge of the city, with twenty thousand knights; and he himself went back with Oliver to Trimonia, and met Karlamagnus there, and told him that they had conquered Vesklara and captured Saevini. The king thanked them, and asked them to go to Trivers to conquer it and slay King Vitakind.

Rollant was delighted with this, and blew his trumpet. And God performed a great miracle: for the sake of King Karlamagnus, the walls of the city fell completely down. And Karlamagnus went into the city with all of his host, and they killed King Vitakind and freed Saxland. Then they went to Vesklara, and spent the night there; King Karlamagnus appointed Bofi the Beardless to take care of the land afterwards, and left a hundred men with him.

King Karlamagnus now sent Geirard home to Numaia to prepare a feast for him, since he intended to be there on Whitsunday; and he himself went home to Eliss.
