[...]Orlando has no wish for any other
Share of the booty from the recent fray,
Except the monster arm of which I've spoken,
Which terror in so many hearts has woken.
In taking it, his aim is not to use
The deadly weapon in his own defence,
For cowardly he deems it to abuse
The laws which govern knights' accoutrements.
A place to hide it in he means to choose
So that it never more may give offence.
The balls, the powder and all other parts
He takes, and with them on his journey starts.
And so, when he had sailed beyond the tide
And reached the farthest depths of open sea,
And nothing of the coast on either side,
Looking to left or right, could he then see,
Taking the deadly instrument, he cried:
'That never more a cavalier may be
Advantaged by your aid, nor evil gain
What valour has deserved, below remain!
'Accursèd and abominable tool,
In Tartarean depths devised and forged
By that Beelzebub beneath whose rule
The world to its destruction thus is urged,
I re-consign you to the deepest hole
Of the Abyss whence you were first disgorged!'
Thus to the deep he flung it; and, meanwhile,
The wind propels him towards the Dreadful Isle.
